Tragedy in Kashmir: What Happened in Pahalgam?

Union Home Minister Amit Shah reached Srinagar on April 22, 2025, following a terrorist attack in Pahalgam’s Baisaran Valley that killed at least 26 tourists and injured others. He chaired a high-level security review meeting with J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and senior officials.

During the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22, 2025, eyewitnesses reported harrowing scenes where gunmen targeted tourists in Baisaran, near Pahalgam. A woman survivor screamed for help for her husband who had been shot—bystanders captured her pleas in videos from the scene. Witnesses recounted that an assailant told a woman he was sparing her so she could ‘narrate the horrors’ to Prime Minister Modi. He intended this chilling message as a warning and a tactic to spread fear.

Eyewitness Accounts: How the Attack Unfolded

Eyewitnesses say that the attackers came from the nearby forest, dressed in military-style uniforms, and began shooting without warning. Survivors recall that the gunmen pretended to be policemen, asking people for their names before opening fire. The attackers reportedly targeted non-Muslims, asking them to recite religious verses or checking their identities in cruel ways. Those who failed these “tests” were shot on the spot.

Former J&K DGP Shesh Paul Vaid says, “This is the Pulwama 2 moment of India. This was a Hamas-style attack on 7 October on Israel. It’s no coincidence that Asim Munir (Pakistan Army chief) uttered illogical words two days ago, and then someone carried out an attack where they asked the tourists about their religion. Our response should be appropriate, something like how Israel responded… This terror attack was unleashed by the Pakistan army. I have been saying that these are SSG (Special Service Group) commandos of the Pakistan army posing as terrorists. It was a well-planned attack… Let them (Pakistan) be alert! I appeal to all the people from Balochistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh, and POK to revolt against the Pakistan army’s terrorist actions and declare independence. India should break Pakistan army’s back and break Pakistan into four parts… All of this is being done under Asim Munir’s command… Pakistan army chief wants to escalate the situation. He wants to prove his credentials… Let him first prove his identity…”

The Resistance Front (TRF), a terrorist group linked to Lashkar-e-Taiba, has claimed responsibility for the attack.
